Help keep your loved one safe — wherever they go

The Dementia Safeguarding Scheme gives people living with dementia a free wristband, so if they ever need help, anyone assisting them can reach the right people in seconds.

Free of charge — donations welcome but never required.

How it works

A wristband that speaks up when it matters

Each wristband carries a QR code. Scan it and it shows the wearer’s emergency contact details — name, next of kin and who to call.

1

Register the details

Tell us about the person living with dementia. Information is stored securely and only you can keep it up to date.

2

Wear the wristband

We’ll arrange a free wristband — collect it from Dementia Concern Causeway or your local GP surgery.

3

Help is a scan away

If they’re ever found wandering or distressed, emergency services or a passer-by can scan the code and see who to contact.

Why families join

Small band, big peace of mind

Peace of mind for loved ones

Know that help is always within reach if something happens.

Stay active in the community

Helps people with dementia remain independent and part of local life.

Raises awareness of dementia

A visible, gentle prompt for the public to offer understanding and help.

Reduces risk out and about

Lowers the danger when someone living with dementia is away from home.

The scheme encourages carers, family and friends to provide useful information that can be used if a person living with dementia goes missing or needs assistance — captured in a simple form and used to identify and support them.

What happens when you join

Western Trust launches the Dementia Wristband Initiative

In partnership with Dementia Concern Causeway, the Public Health Agency and Derry GP Federation, the Western Trust officially launched the Dementia Concern Causeway Dementia Wristband Initiative on Thursday 10 April 2025 at the Guildhall, Derry/Londonderry.

Launched by Mayor Lilian Seenoi Barr, it’s being rolled out across the Western Trust following its success in the Northern Trust area last autumn.

The scheme is promoted on public transport, in hospitals, GP surgeries, community facilities and social media. Free wristbands are distributed by GP social workers, dementia navigators and voluntary and community organisations supporting older people across the Western Trust — including DEEDS (Dementia Engaged and Empowered in Derry and Strabane), based at the Old Library Trust Healthy Living Centre.

In Omagh and Fermanagh, wristbands can be requested from the Western Trust dementia navigator, the age-friendly co-ordinators at Fermanagh and Omagh council, and SWAP (South West Age Partnership).
